4 Ways Exercise Physiology supports NDIS participants

Exercise Physiology is a growing allied health profession in Western Australia that uses exercise to promote health and wellbeing, offering a unique approach to supporting NDIS participants. Exercise Physiologists are experts in understanding the effects of different exercises on a wide range of health conditions and injuries.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is designed to provide support and help to individuals with disabilities to achieve their goals. However, understanding the NDIS and how it can help you, can be difficult. Below are a few ways Exercise Physiology supports NDIS participants.

  1. Exercise Specialists:

Exercise Physiologists are exercise specialists. We understand that the same exercise program won’t work for everyone, people recover from injuries at different rates, and the same condition can present differently from person to person. Therefore, the role of an Exercise Physiologist is to use their exercise expertise to create personalised exercise programs that are safe, effective and help achieve each participant’s goal.

By creating personalised programs, Exercise Physiologists can ensure the exercises are suitable for each participants ability, as well as taking into consideration their personal preferences, leading to more meaningful outcomes. Whether you have a disability, injury or chronic condition, Exercise Physiologists can tailor your exercise program to help manage and/or improve condition related symptoms.

To ensure the program is effective and aligns with the participants changing needs and goals, progress is regularly assessed. This also provides the opportunity to highlight the progress made by the NDIS participant through Exercise Physiology to the NDIS.

    2. Enhance physical function and independence

One of the main goals for most NDIS participants includes improving their physical function so they can be more independent. For example, a program can be tailored to increase mobility and upper body strength to help a participant be able to hang out their washing. Or strengthen their lower body to help them walk without an aid and improve their balance to reduce the risk of falls.

      3. Claim from multiple budgets:

There are several budgets NDIS participants are able to claim from for various services. Most allied health professionals covered by NDIS funding are only claimable from Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living. However, Exercise Physiologists can claim from the ‘Improved Health and Wellbeing’ budget and/or the ‘Improved Daily Living’ budget, depending on participant goals. This means Exercise Physiology can support participants in managing the impact of their condition as well as increasing their skills, independence and community participation.

Exercise Physiology sessions can be individual or group sessions, providing social interaction and an opportunity to build genuine connections with others. For NDIS participants who may face additional stressors related to their disability or condition, these social interactions can have significant improvements on mental health and quality of life.

        4. Education:

Exercise Physiologists endeavour to help participants achieve sustainable, long-term improvements. One key way to achieve this is through education. By educating NDIS participants on the importance of exercise and the numerous benefits it has on both physical and mental health, how to complete exercises and how to incorporate exercise into their lives, NDIS participants are more likely to be proactive in their own health and wellbeing. This can lead to more informed decisions about their health and self-management.

Including Exercise Physiology into NDIS support plans offers a wide range of health benefits, leading to greater quality of life.
